Not every urgent message deserves an urgent response. Sometimes the wisest thing we can do is pause.

Technology has brought so many conveniences into our lives. We use it to communicate with loved ones, manage our finances, organize our schedules, plan trips, and stay connected with the people who matter most.

But have you ever received a suspicious text, unexpected email, or alarming computer warning that made your heart skip a beat?

Perhaps it said your account had been compromised, your computer was infected, or someone had made an unauthorized purchase.

Suddenly, the convenience of technology becomes a source of anxiety.

🌻 When Fear Becomes Someone Else's Tool

Recently, someone close to me encountered what appeared to be a technical problem. A message led her to contact someone claiming to provide computer support.

What followed was an elaborate attempt to frighten her into revealing personal information. The callers even claimed to represent government authorities.

Fortunately, she began questioning the situation before sharing the sensitive information they wanted.

Her experience reminded me of something important:

Scammers don't always need to outsmart our technology. Sometimes they simply try to overwhelm our judgment.

They create urgency. They make frightening claims. They discourage us from asking questions. And they hope we'll act before thinking.

🕊️ Your First Step Toward Digital Peace: Pause

Here's one practical tip you can start using today.

When an unexpected message, phone call, or computer warning demands immediate action, remember these three words:

PAUSE. VERIFY. PROTECT.

PAUSE

When an unexpected message creates panic or pressure, give yourself time to think before reacting.

VERIFY

Contact the organization using a verified website or phone number you found independently.

PROTECT

Keep passwords, verification codes, financial details, and other sensitive information secure.

Pause: Resist the pressure to respond immediately. Fear and urgency are common tools used in scams.

Verify: Contact the organization using a phone number or website you independently know is legitimate—not the contact information supplied in the suspicious message.

Protect: Never provide passwords, verification codes, or sensitive personal information simply because someone unexpectedly asks for them.

These small habits can make a meaningful difference.

And remember, even knowledgeable and experienced technology users can be targeted. Being cautious isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of awareness.
